About the buyer
Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council buys as a local authority, advertising tender opportunities through The Chest, the North West's shared procurement portal. The portal was set up with funding from the North West Centre of Excellence to connect regional buyers and suppliers. Registration on the Suppliers' Area is free and brings email alerts on matching opportunities. Suppliers already signed up to ProContract elsewhere in the region do not need to register again. Higher-value contracts also appear nationally on Find a Tender. The Chest carries the council's contracts register, showing which suppliers currently hold agreements.
UK local government drives £140bn in annual procurement, led by social protection (£66.6bn) and education (£57.1bn).
Over the past 5 years, most of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council's contract awards have been in construction work, health and social work and architectural and engineering services.
