Tender description

The Hepatobiliary department with a dedicated elective theatre covers hepatobiliary emergencies (liver abscesses, liver cysts, bile duct explorations and bile duct injuries), attending regularly the emergency theatre, has currently only two ultrasound systems, an old and newer model. The new system with the new transducers, although from the same company is not compatible with the older ultrasound transducers. The old ultrasound system is no longer supported by the company; it is now obsolete and basically not usable anymore. A replacement system will be urgently required. Having only one functioning system has proven to be insufficient particularly when two operating surgeons require the equipment to be readily available at the same time. This piece of equipment is highly valuable with the increasing demand of the emergency hepatobiliary cases, following the e current centralisation process, and the need in assessing intraoperatively the biliary tree with the USS (55 emergency cases last year). The second machine would be necessary to deliver safely an HPB cancer service and hepatobiliary emergencies, on a background of increasing numbers of long waiting hepatobiliary cases and increasing complex biliary emergency pathology.
