About the buyer
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council is a local authority covering the Black Country, and advertises its contract opportunities through In-Tend, its electronic procurement portal. Suppliers register with In-Tend to receive alerts on contracts in their sector and request tender documents. Social value counts alongside price when contracts are awarded, weighing the wider benefit to Sandwell's communities. Think Sandwell, the council's business gateway, links local companies to the tendering system and supports bids from social enterprises and the voluntary sector. Contract procedure rules and a public contracts register set out how each tender is run.
UK local government drives £140bn in annual procurement, led by social protection (£66.6bn) and education (£57.1bn).
Over the past 5 years, most of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council's contract awards have been in construction work, repair and maintenance and health and social work.
