About the buyer
Brighton and Hove City Council buys as a local authority, with procurement staff spread across its many service departments rather than one central team. Tender and quotation opportunities are advertised through South East Shared Services, with lower-value contracts also listed on Contracts Finder. A quick quotes tool on South East Shared Services handles competitive bidding for smaller contracts. Smaller purchases go through competitive written quotes, while larger contracts move to open tendering. Construction contractors are drawn from the ConstructionLine database, and the council keeps separate approved lists for adult social care and children's services.
UK local government drives £140bn in annual procurement, led by social protection (£66.6bn) and education (£57.1bn).
Over the past 5 years, most of Brighton and Hove City Council's contract awards have been in education and training, construction work and health and social work.
