About the buyer
Maidstone Borough Council runs local services for the borough, and buys as a local authority with its own procurement team. Tender opportunities appear on the Kent Business Portal, run using the Pro-Contract e-tendering system. Contracts above a set threshold are advertised and formally tendered, using Open or Restricted procedures. Smaller purchases are awarded after written quotes from at least three suppliers, with a preference for local firms. No approved supplier list is kept, so each contract goes out to tender individually. The council's procurement team also delivers commissioned and collaborative buying for authorities across Kent.
UK local government drives £140bn in annual procurement, led by social protection (£66.6bn) and education (£57.1bn).
Over the past 5 years, most of Maidstone Borough Council's contract awards have been in construction work, architectural and engineering services and business services.
