Tender description
The Large Structures Testing Laboratory (LSTL) at the University of Southampton requires the design completion, manufacture, and delivery of a Large Laboratory Testing Frame: specifically, a reaction frame to enable vertical loading using the 2.5MN actuator. This reaction frame will support a previously procured and commissioned Instron Hydropuls 2.5 MN (both tension and compression) linear actuator with a total displacement stroke 500 mm. The actuator includes a dynamically rated 2.5 MN load cell, and the ability to attach hinged swivel joints at each end (when needed). To include an element of future proofing the frame design should also be capable of supporting a 4 MN actuator (unfactored) which is the next actuator largest available. The large test frame project consists of four phases: Phase 1: The Contractor is to complete the final design of the testing frame Phase 2: The Contractor is to manufacture the frame components Phase 3: The Contractor is to deliver these components to LSTL at the University Phase 4: The University will assemble the reaction frame onsite as per the Contractor's guidance

About the buyer
University of Southampton is a higher education institution whose procurement team runs tenders and quotations under its own financial regulations. Tenders are advertised through In-Tend, the university's e-tendering system. Many contracts are awarded through framework agreements managed by the Southern Universities Procurement Consortium. Larger opportunities may also appear on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender. Purchasing teams raise orders and requisitions for faculties and professional service groups. Procurement thresholds set the route to market, ranging from a single quotation to a formal tender. Contractors must hold appropriate insurance before work begins.
Education procurement reached £47.4bn in 2024/25, the fourth-largest public sector budget.
Over the past 5 years, most of University of Southampton's contract awards have been in software and information systems, office and computing equipment and architectural and engineering services.
