Tender description
The Met Office operates a network of c.75 weather stations in the marine environment across buoys, ships and other remote platforms or islands - these are deployed in nearshore waters and the Atlantic Ocean, with a few ship stations travelling further afield. The network relies upon satellite communications to ensure continued timely submission of essential marine observation data, with all stations hosting an Autonomous Marine Observing System (AMOS2X) equipped with an Iridium short burst data (SBD) modem. Our contract with our current satellite communications supplier is due to expire, the objective of this procurement therefore, is to identify a satellite communication network and airtime service provider in order to continue to be able to transfer observational data from remote marine stations to our data ingestion system via Iridium service provider generated emails.

About the buyer
Met Office buys as a central government agency, delivering weather and climate services as an executive agency and trading fund of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. Tenders run through the Met Office's own ProActis portal, with opportunities and awards also published on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender. Collaborative government agreements route much of its buying through the Crown Commercial Service, alongside the ESPO and YPO frameworks. Standard contracts are awarded through desktop competitions or full tender exercises, usually inviting four or more suppliers to bid. The commercial team runs this process, following Cabinet Office best practice.
Procurement spend from central entities makes up 66% of overall UK public spend.
Over the past 5 years, most of Met Office's contract awards have been in software and information systems, research and development and IT services.
