Tender description
The existing contract for kennelling stray dogs under the care of Medway Council is due to expire in May 2023. We are seeking local businesses that would like the opportunity to work with Medway Council to assist in providing the necessary kennelling and care for the dogs under our responsibility. Medway Council Animal Warden Service is responsible for the collection of stray dogs within the borough. The service operates Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:00 and officers work on an on call basis Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 9:00 to 17:00. The Animal Warden carries a scanning device to identify dogs fitted with a microchip. If the address of the owner is identified, the Animal Warden will telephone the registered details to advise that the dog has been seized by the Council. If possible, the dog will be returned to the owner should they be in the vicinity, if this is not possible or the dog is being allowed to repeatedly stray it will be transported to the Council’s contracted kennels.

About the buyer
Medway Council governs the Medway towns in Kent, and buys as a local authority with its own central procurement team. All contracting opportunities are advertised on the Kent Business Portal, where suppliers can search live tenders and set up email alerts. Suppliers must also register on the Central Digital Platform, a requirement since the Procurement Act 2023 took effect. Dynamic purchasing systems cover recurring needs such as SEND transport, supported living and agency staff recruitment. Premarket engagement with suppliers shapes tender requirements before contracts go live. The council also publishes its full contracts register on the same portal.
UK local government drives £140bn in annual procurement, led by social protection (£66.6bn) and education (£57.1bn).
Over the past 5 years, most of Medway Council's contract awards have been in construction work, architectural and engineering services and health and social work.
