Surgical Tenders and Contracts

Surgical procurement covers theatre consumables such as clips, energy and stapling devices, trocars, laparoscopic instruments, gloves and vascular grafts. Capital equipment also comes up, such as surgical robots, diathermy machines, operating tables and theatre lighting. Instrument servicing, repair and decontamination are bought as well.
Consumables go out through supplier frameworks, while capital kit is usually bought one item at a time, often as a direct award called off an existing framework. Some hospitals use consignment agreements or managed services. NHS trusts and health boards are the buyers, and NHS Supply Chain, NHS SBS and the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership run the national frameworks.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about surgical instruments, surgical equipment, surgical consumables, surgical gloves, surgical robot, operating theatre, laparoscopic, minimally invasive surgery, electrosurgical, surgical sutures in the UK public sector.
What CPV codes cover surgical procurement?
Surgical notices carry 33169000 (Surgical instruments), 33162100 (Operating-theatre devices), 33161000 (Electrosurgical unit) and 33141420 (Surgical gloves). Plenty of surgical notices carry only a general medical equipment code, or no code at all.
Who buys surgical equipment and consumables?
Trusts and health boards buy the capital kit, usually calling off a national agreement rather than tendering from scratch. Consumables are bought collectively: national supply bodies and regional consortia run the large multi-supplier frameworks that individual hospitals then draw on. Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Ireland each run their own equivalents, so the same product reaches tender several times under different names.
Are surgical contracts mostly awarded through frameworks?
A large share of them. The awards in this data are dominated by multi-supplier framework agreements and call-offs against them, which is how theatre consumables actually reach a hospital. For a surgical supplier, getting onto the agreement matters more than watching for one-off tenders.
How much surgical activity does Stotles track?
Notices appear at every stage, with most of them awards and a meaningful pool at pre-tender. Coverage is thinner at the open-tender end, so the award record is the more useful read: it shows which frameworks are running, and when they run out.
How do I find surgical contracts before they are formally tendered?
Read commissioning intentions, service reviews, market position statements and Provider Selection Regime notices, which show surgical work coming due ahead of a notice. On Stotles you can track those signals and the commissioners behind them, then follow a notice from pre-tender through to award.
