Tender description
The current MV Varagen bow thruster is powered solely by the starboard main engine. Consequently, the loss of this engine during maneuvering leaves the vessel with only the port main engine and no thruster capability. The proposal is to power a second bow thruster from the port main engine to increase redundancy and improve maneuverability in adverse weather conditions. The contract will require the supplier to design and submit proposals to Lloyds Register (LR) for approval with assistance from owner. Supply the required approved equipment and install following LR procedures. The additional bow thruster will then be commissioned. About the buyer
Orkney Islands Council is the local authority for the Orkney Islands, and buys through a dedicated procurement service led by a service manager. Contract opportunities are advertised on the Public Contracts Scotland Portal, with larger opportunities also published on Find a Tender. Construction works are sourced through a Dynamic Purchasing System open to approved contractors. Smaller purchases are assessed directly by individual council officers, with formal written quotations sought above a lower threshold. A public contracts register lists the council's current and past agreements. Suppliers must also meet a sustainable procurement policy covering environmental and social standards.
UK local government drives £140bn in annual procurement, led by social protection (£66.6bn) and education (£57.1bn).
Over the past 5 years, most of Orkney Islands Council's contract awards have been in repair and maintenance, transport equipment and architectural and engineering services.
