Tender description

Equipment provides all the scanning functions that have been lost due to relocation of predecessor systems, plus the ability to multiplex more than two antibodies simultaneously and scan microscope slides, and also perform analyses in the visual fluorescence spectrum in addition to near infra-red. Lot 1: The Li-Cor 3350-STA Odyssey® M Imaging System will be widely used in the CVS by many researchers for a multitude of different functions. Also with the relocation of instruments that were being used by researchers in the CVS to the IRR there is considerable downtime for our researchers who currently have to move across the campus to access these instruments. Some assays are time critical and potentially results may now be affected due to an enforced time delay in moving from one side of the campus to the other. The Odyssey M provides all the scanning functions that have been lost due to relocation of predecessor systems, plus the ability to multiplex more than two antibodies simultaneously and scan microscope slides, and also perform analyses in the visual fluorescence spectrum in addition to near infra-red - I believe this is unique to this piece of equipment.

About the buyer

University of Edinburgh buys as a higher education institution, through its own Procurement function. Larger tenders are advertised on Public Contract Scotland, via the PCS-T e-tendering platform. Suppliers must register separately on both systems before bidding. Much of this procurement flows through framework agreements with APUC, Scotland Excel and the Crown Commercial Service. Prior information notices invite market engagement from suppliers ahead of larger tenders. The Strategic Procurement team leads regulated sourcing, while Operational Procurement manages day-to-day purchase orders. A Procurement Support team handles reporting, data analysis and training across the function.

Education procurement reached £47.4bn in 2024/25, the fourth-largest public sector budget.

Over the past 5 years, most of University of Edinburgh's contract awards have been in laboratory and precision equipment, medical equipment and pharmaceuticals and software and information systems.
