Description

The LAA, on behalf of the Lord Chancellor, has a statutory duty to facilitate access to justice and compliance with obligations under Article 6(3) of the European Convention on Human Rights (‘ECHR’) by ensuring that individuals detained at a Police Station receive effective legal advice and representation in criminal matters. The Crime Defence Direct (‘CDD’) Service provides non means tested telephone based legal advice directly to members of the public who are suspected of certain criminal offences and who are detained at a Police Station in England and Wales. The CDD Service is reserved for individuals suspected of certain non-indictable offences. The ITA Service provides non means tested telephone based legal advice on immigration matters to members of the public who are detained in police custody in England and Wales. Immigration advice may be provided in relation to a range of non-criminal immigration offences.
