Description

Galway City Council in conjunction with the European Regional Development fund, North Western Regional Assembly and the National Transport Authority intends to construct a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the Lower River Corrib circa 25m downstream of the existing Salmon Weir Bridge. The bridge will link Gaol Road (west) to Newtownsmith (east) in Galway City. The scheme is a 3no. span Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge constructed over the Lower River Corrib (main channel), Mill Race (Persse’s Distillery River) and Waterside Canal (Friar’s River). The new bridge structure will tie into the existing footpaths on Gaol Road and Newtownsmith. The main central 50m bridge span over the Lower River Corrib comprises a singular steel spine beam with cantilever transverse beams supporting the bridge decking. The main span bridge width varies from 4.5m at its narrowest to 8.5m at midspan. The 13.5m and 18.5m approach spans are steel beam and reinforced concrete composite construction and will span the Mill Race and Waterside Canal respectively. The bridge substructure will be reinforced concrete construction, founded on sleeved reinforced concrete bored cast in place piles at the abutments and spread footings founded on and anchored to rock at the piers. Phased temporary traffic management will be as required on both Gaol Road (east and west) and Newtownsmith. Due to the environmentally sensitive site location no temporary or permanent works will be permitted to be undertaken from the watercourses. Masonry walls adjacent to all watercourses under the bridge are protected structures and will be protected by the Contractor during the works. The Contractor will provide temporary access bridges and working platforms form Gaol Road and Newtownsmith Road over Mill Race and Waterside Canal respectively. To comply with ERDF funding drawdown the bridge shall be installed no later than 30th November 2022.
