The Provision of a Breeding Seabird Survey of Lambay Island SPA Co Dublin

Published

Description

Lambay Island is a Special Protection Area under Directive 2009/147/EC for the conservation of the following breeding seabird species: Fulmar, Fulmarus glacialis; Cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo; Shag, Phalacrocorax aristotelis; Lesser Black-backed Gull, Larus fuscus; Herring Gull, Larus argentatus; Kittiwake, Rissa tridactyla; Guillemot, Uria aalge; Razorbill, Alca torda; and Puffin, Fratercula arctica. Effective conservation management of Ireland’s SPA Network is informed by contemporary population estimates of the relevant species at various geographic scales i.e. from the site to the national level. Lambay Island SPA is one of the most important seabird colonies both in the western Irish Sea and nationally. The last time a comprehensive breeding survey of Lambay Island SPA occurred was in 2015. Therefore, a resurvey is now due. NPWS are seeking a suitably qualified and experienced team to undertake field work in early June in order to provide contemporary population estimates of the island’s breeding seabird species.
