Description

This project is a collaboration of working project group lead by Department of Science in Waterford Institute of Technology. The aim of the project is to promote and highlight the diversity of species that live and thrive on the entire 46km Waterford Greenway. This will include the promotion of plants, fungi, insects’ birds, and mammals each group will have a place in the new interpretive material. WIT West Campus will introduce the project to the public by creating biodiversity hot spots on campus and at selected locations on The Waterford Greenway. The project will also promote environmental based research activities in Carriganore such as the WIT Dept. of Science research trials on sustainable farming practices, collaborations with WIT Forestry in creating a new native tree trail on the West Campus and horticulture enhancing the public knowledge and experience of the biodiversity of the Greenway. The current phase of the project has three interpretive elements; technology/software, information panels and an art installation with seating area to enhance the return visitor experience of the Greenway. Three sites have been agreed upon for this project Carriganore is the primary site with Mount Congreve and Durrow being the secondary sites in this development phase. A central theme across all the locations will be biodiversity, focusing on native trees and plants at Carriganore, the wetland species at Mount Congreve and mammal species at Durrow. Durrow is an open site and has the potential for an immersive educational play area. The planning and landscaping at this site are under separate funding and will be overseen by Waterford City & County Council. Common signage with a QR code to link into the software element will connect the theme of biodiversity across the three sites. WCC have agreed that the planting will be pollinator friendly following the planting code outlined https://www.biodiversityireland.ie/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/Pollinator-Council-Guide-P Lot 218260: Tenders for the supply of biodiversity interpretive material Lot 1: Software.
