Description

Gas Networks Ireland (GNI) operates two compressor stations Brighouse Bay and Beattock, both in located in South Scotland, to transport natural gas from the UK through a pipeline system to Ireland. The natural gas compressors on these compressor station are driven by gas turbines between 6MW and 12MW of rated power. The primary objective of the Electrification Programme is to reduce the use of fuel gas in the operation of the Brighouse Bay and Beattock compressors stations and associated fugitive emissions thereby aiding the reduction of greenhouse gas emission intensity by 50 percent (from 2010 level) by 2030 as outlined in Gas Networks Ireland’s Low Carbon Pledge. The Electrification Programme at both Brighouse Bay and Beattock compressor stations comprises three major components at both stations: 1. construction of a new compressor hall with an EMD and ancillary equipment; 2. construction of a new electrical connection to upgrade the supply capacity to power the new EMD, and 3. the installation of a vent recovery system to capture normally vented gas and return it to the gas network.
