Description

The Four Great Highways – public realm improvement project is within Project 2 of the Levelling Up Funding from UK Government and aims to promote and enhance the four great highways of Llangollen, by providing civil improvement works to enhance access and visibility to, and interpretation of the Llangollen Canal and World Heritage Site, the former Ruabon to Barmouth railway line, the River Dee and Thomas Telford’s historic London to Holyhead Road. The aim is to improve the residents’ and visitors’ experience and increase time people stay in the town. Works will consist of the following main items: - Area 1: Wharf  Existing slope resurfaced and enhanced with handrails / seating and improved drainage  New steps and handrails for primary route, minimum 2m wide for two-way movement  Enhanced biodiversity, amenity planting and seasonal interest  Improved surfacing  Existing slope resurfaced and enhanced with enhanced signage and wayfinding Area 2: Connections between the Wharf, Railway and Lower Dee Mill Park  Improved signage and wayfinding to link the four great highways Area 3: Lower Dee Mill Park  Significant ramp and steps access to park - accessible route from Mill Street to enable through route from town to Lower Dee Mill car park  Upgraded existing steps and handrails  Improved materials with finishes  Enhanced heritage features  Consideration of the removal of some ash trees to gain longer views to the bridge  Consideration of the removal of trees/undergrowth from retaining wall to the river, and bank between the river and Mill Street pavement to improve the views into the park clearance  Replacement wooden bridge in park and provide a defined route for water sports users between Lower Dee Mill Park and the tiered access to the water  Aesthetic works to improve and promote the old sluice gate and turbine, and provide interpretation of the industrial heritage  Increased biodiversity Area 4: Signage & Wayfinding Car parks and Lower Dee Mill Park - interpretation boards for the four great highways and other places of interest and some directional signage.
