TfGM - Electric Vehicle Charging RFI
Published
Description
As part of the plans highlighted by the Mayor for Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s target of becoming a zero-carbon city by 2038 at the latest (12 years ahead of the Government’s target for the UK of 2050), the wider drivers for implementation of EV charging across our network include; • Support achievement of GMCA 2038 carbon neutral target. • Tackle energy security and energy cost concerns. • Encourage public transport use. • Enable ‘transport hubs’ to flourish. EV charging needs to provide a convenient, affordable and reliable charging for the public and rapid transit customers, whilst complimenting other sustainable forms of travel such as walking and cycling. This will contribute towards TfGM’s Clean Air Strategy and 2040 Transport Vision to build the bee network. Expansion of EV charging equipment provides more sustainable journeys and less reliance upon external energy sources. Despite recent trends in electricity prices, EVs still benefit from lower fuel, running and maintenance costs than their petrol or diesel equivalents. Expansion of EV chargepoint infrastructure forms part of wider government plans to reduce the UK’s reliance on imports of foreign oil, improving the security of our energy supply and reducing the country’s vulnerability to volatility in global energy prices.
