Description

The "Folkestone - A Brighter Future" scheme seeks to 'level up' Folkestone's town centre by supporting active travel, creating a high-quality environment that supports civic pride and reverses years of disparity in investment by transforming the fortunes of the towns primary retail areas. The scheme involves changes to the existing highway alignment and public spaces to improve user experience and create a cyclist and pedestrian-friendly environment. The project work includes road realignment and reconstruction, landscaping, inclusion of urban design features, relocation, and installation of services, and decommissioning of two pedestrian subways. The site is situated in Folkestone and investigations are scheduled along the following main roads which are currently in use: • Station Approach and Arrival Area • Cheriton Road and Cheriton Gardens • Middleburg Square • Shellons Street • Bouverie Square • Sandgate Road • Guildhall Street/Gloucester Place Mature trees and utilities are present throughout the site and within the vicinity of proposed investigations. The surrounding area predominately comprises of a bus terminal (Bouverie Square), residential and commercial properties. The site and investigation areas are accessible from public roads and require temporary traffic management to manage pedestrian and road user safety. The sites are predominately flat, with the exception of Shellons Street which has an average grade of 5%. Soil contamination may exist within Made Ground as a result of the varying historic site uses and carriageway construction. Historical foundations may be present and impact ground investigation. Based on the historical maps' foundations are more likely to be encountered where historical buildings were situated including: • Shellons Street • Middleburg Square • Bouverie Square • Sandgate Street • Guildhall Street/Oxford Terrace/Gloucester Place No watercourses/features exist on the site.
