Capital Purchase of Devices for WICIS Rollout

Within Wales’ intensive care units, continuous patient monitoring is essential to detect critical changes in a patient’s condition. When every second counts, for healthcare staff who need to make critical decisions for seriously ill patients, information is a vital resource. Now, there will be a new digital solution namely, the Welsh Intensive Care Information System (WICIS), which will collect real-time information automatically from the monitoring devices, infusion pumps and respiratory equipment used for each patient’s care, providing easy access to vital data and insights, and giving frontline staff a quick and clear overview of the status of patients and devices. Aside from the benefits of having accurate and retrievable data to improve patient outcomes, WICIS will also greatly benefit future research where access to data is currently a time consuming and costly exercise. There is also the benefit of no longer having to transcribe huge amounts of data onto paper charts. As such, there will be savings and efficiencies associated with a significant reduction in the use of paper and pens, 3rd party storage and archiving, and nursing time. There are several workflows addressing the various elements required to integrate WICIS into the clinical areas. The procurement of additional Devices is one of the final elements to be put in place and will ensure that Cardiff and Vale UHB Critical Care will be WICIS-ready in time for the ultimate program roll-out.
