SRUC Animal & Veterinary Sciences is considering options for the provision of a Feed Mill that will be used to manufacture experimental feeds for farm animal research projects and trials, with emphasis on pigs and poultry. SRUC Animal & Veterinary Sciences is considering options for the provision of a Feed Mill that will be used to manufacture experimental feeds for farm animal research projects and trials, with emphasis on pigs and poultry. The Mill will be permanently located at our site at Bush Estate, Edinburgh. Construction of the building in which the mill will be located is expected to be completed by mid-September 2017 and it is anticipated that the mill will be delivered and installed by early October 2017. The area within the building that has been allocated for the mill is circa 12 m wide x 17.3m deep x 5.5m high. The following minimum requirements are provided for guidance only and it is recognised by SRUC that the specifications offered may vary and include additional options over those listed below. SRUC will consider alternative and innovative suggestions from tenderers. The Mill will: 1. have bin facility to store up to four raw materials in volumes of 10 000 L; 2. be able to mix a minimum batch size of at least 100 kg and a maximum batch size of 1 000 kg; 3. have two mixers with weighing in platforms at minimal accuracy of 0.01 kg, one mixer of ~3 000 L and one mixer of ~1 200 L, to facilitate experimental diet consistency; 4. include a steam conditioner with controlled steam provision and variable throughput; 5. operate at ‘commercial steam pressures and moisture content’ and will have the ability to monitor temperatures and pressures remotely. Real time moisture analysis is desirable. Once achieved, the desired temperature, residence time and steam input rates should be able to be held constant with minimal variation over the manufacturing time of a batch (expected variations/tolerances to be provided by supplier); 6. employ augers and screws (or better) to connect mixers, conditioner and pelletizer; 7. be capable of producing feed in pellets of a range of sizes suitable for pigs and poultry at variable rates (up to 1 000 kg/h); 8. have a band cooler post pelleting with variable speeds; 9. be capable of the post-pelleting application of liquid enzymes, fats, vitamins, etc; 10. be capable of producing feed in crumb form; 11. be able to achieve and hold a range of conditioning temperatures; 12. have sampling ports/points that allow samples to be taken at appropriate points throughout the feed manufacturing process; 13. have the capability to bag finished feed in 20 kg sacks (stitched) or tote bags; 14. allow for routine maintenance and cleaning procedures that must be within the capability of suitably trained SRUC staff; 15. require to include a minimum of 50 % recyclable components and any wood incorporated into the construction, must be sourced from sustainable resources; 16. have to work in compliance with recognised EU standards for noise, vibration and power consumption.
