Description

South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP), in conjunction with the MacGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Access Forum, invites tenders for upland trail improvement works on Strickeen Mountain, consisting of: 1. Construction of approximately 230 metres of composite boardwalk; and 2. Construction of approximately 220 metres of stone-pitched upland path. The purpose of the works is to provide a safe, durable, and sustainable walking route while protecting sensitive upland bog and wet and dry heath habitat from further erosion, trampling, and water damage. The boardwalk section is intended for flatter-gradient, wetter ground conditions, while the stone-pitched sections, where required will stabilise steep and heavily eroded terrain approaching the summit where a boardwalk is not suitable due to gradient. All works are to be completed using low-impact, hand-built construction methods appropriate to a remote and environmentally sensitive upland environment. Works should be completed no later than 31st of March 2027.
