Scrub Clearance Moneygal Bog
Published
Description
Ulster Wildlife is seeking to appoint a suitable contractor to clear invasive scrub on Moneygal Bog Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Moneygal Bog SAC is a raised bog site in Co, Tyrone north west of Castlederg (location shown in appendix A). Moneygal Bog SAC is situated in an area with a high density of forestry plantations and even has a parcel of conifer plantation within the boundaries of the designated site. As a result of this there is a significant level of encroachment of conifer scrub within the bog which is bringing the site into unfavourable condition. In areas of historical turf cutting there is also significant encroachment of broadleaved scrub, including birch, willow and alder. Encroachment such as this on raised bogs has the detrimental impact of lowering the water table. The ever increasing level of scrub removes water from the bog which in turn prevents specialist species that require a high water levels from surviving.
