Description
Bord na Mona is publishing this Periodic indicative notice (PIN) to advise suppliers that we will shortly be looking to expand our supply chains for our expected future increased biomass supply and resale requirements for Irish and international markets. Bord na Mona intends to provide a means for suppliers to qualify as Biomass suppliers to Bord na Mona Biomass Ltd through the establishment of a number of qualification systems over the coming months. It is envisaged that up to five such qualification systems will be created covering: System 1 International Established Biomass Supply Chains, System 2 International Concept Biomass Supply Chains, System 3 Indigenous Forestry Supply, System 4 Indigenous Energy Crop, System 5 Indigenous Residual Supply. Bord na Mona is publishing this PIN for advertisement purposes and on a voluntary basis only as the Utilities Directive does not apply for fuels purchased for the production of energy. This is not a call for competition. Bord na Móna Biomass Ltd, a subsidiary of Bord na Móna (BnM) is established to support the development of the domestic biomass market by mobilising the biomass supply potential of the privately-owned forestry sector in Ireland and provide further opportunities for sustainable indigenous employment. Developing this biomass market will also require the establishment of substantial international biomass supply chains to supplement domestic supply, particularly in the short and medium term. Bord na Mona has contracted with Biomass fuel suppliers over the past 10 years for the supply of solid biomass materials, derived from forest residues and sustainable energy crops, to co-fire its Edenderry electricity generation plant with Peat fuel. Sustainable Biomass usage will continue to be a key component in reducing consumption of higher carbon intensive energy generation sources. It is envisaged that demand for biomass supply into the Irish market will increase significantly for both generation of electricity and for renewable heating schemes from 2020 to 2030 and beyond, supported by a number of Government backed initiatives including REFIT3, SSRH and RESS. In addition to seeking on-going supplies of biomass for its power plant — Edenderry Power, Bord na Mona is proposing to use any qualification systems established for anticipated supplies of biomass annually, on a non-exclusive basis for possible resale to other biomass customers, potentially including ESB for the purposes of its power plants at West Offaly Power and Lough Ree Power.
