Barra Airport Catering and Retail Concession

Provision of catering offering including light meals and snacks, and hot and cold beverages, particularly during the summer months. Provision of Retail offering particularly gifts aimed at casual visitors and goods for passengers including confectionary, books, newspapers and magazines. HIAL wish to appoint a Concessionaire for the provision of catering and retail services at Barra Airport. Barra Airport is famous for its beauty – boasting beaches, machair and hills – and all in a small island; Barra is a special place to visit – especially memorable if you fly in because of the beach landing strip. Washed by the tide twice a day, Traigh Mhor beach is reputed to be the only beach runway in the world to handle scheduled airline services. As a small island community of approximately 1200 people, the air service to Glasgow and ferries to Oban and South Uist are critically important services for island life. A café has operated at Barra Airport for many years, and has witnessed the considerable growth of interest in the airport, partly as a result of increased flights, but also significantly due to the airport’s unique beach setting and the world-wide interest this has for visitors, whether or not they are flying in or out. As a result there is high demand for catering services, including light meals and snacks, and hot and cold beverages, particularly during the summer months. Retail of gifts has been an ancillary activity to date, however HIAL believe there to be considerable scope to develop this once additional space is made available for the purpose. As well as gifts aimed at casual visitors, goods for passengers are also likely to be required, including confectionary, books, newspapers and magazines.
