Description
In addition to the clinical patient workload, the department is required to perform leak testing of sealed sources used for quality assurance purposes. The gamma counter is also used to perform these measurements. The department currently use a single sample well counter. This includes manual initiation of the count and manual decay correction calculations, both of which introduce potential for human error. These errors can affect the accuracy and reliability of the final results. The gamma counter is well past its recommended working life, and has limited internal and external technical support, making troubleshooting increasingly difficult. It is also inefficient and unergonomic when compared to modern technologies. In comparison to modern multi-sample or automated gamma counter technology, the current system is inefficient and no longer meets the practical or technical needs of the department. Upgrading to a modern solution would not only improve accuracy and reliability but also enhance workflow efficiency. Health Inspectorate Wales have also recommended for modernisation of the existing equipment during a recent inspection (inspection Oct 2024, report issued Jan 2025). Failure of the gamma counter would have substantial impact to clinical oncology and nephrology services within the South East Wales region.
