Skye Cycle Way Ground Investigation Works

Provide information on the ground and groundwater conditions to enable detailed design of new proposed structures, the general active travel route and to assess geotechnical risk for the Skye Cycle Way Phase 1. Lot 1: The proposed Skye Cycle Way route runs from Kyleakin at the Skye Bridge roundabout to Breakish, on the north side of the A87 trunk road. Parts of the route are on existing old single track road abandoned when the trunk road was upgraded, and parts are new sections of connecting pathway. Full details are provided in the GI Spec document and Schedule. The purpose of this investigation is to provide information on the ground and groundwater conditions to enable detailed design of new proposed structures, the general active travel route and to assess geotechnical risk. The main objectives of the ground investigation are: - To investigate the ground conditions across the Scheme including thickness of any artificial ground, depth to rock head and thickness of upper weathered zone; to undertake geophysical logging of selected rotary cored boreholes within rock; - To obtain samples for the purposes of geotechnical testing to determine soil stiffness / densities and rock strengths; - To obtain samples for geo-environmental testing to enable characterisation of the ground conditions beneath the site and inform risk assessment and re-use/disposal options; - Dynamic Cone Penetrometer tests (DCPs) to be undertaken at each trial pit location to inform CBR for cycleway pavement design. - Installations within the boreholes to facilitate ground water and gas monitoring to establish the groundwater and gas regime of the site. The investigation comprises intrusive methods as outlined in the Skye Cycle Way Ground Investigation Specification document, and detailed throughout Schedule 1 and within Schedule 2 of the document. A pass/fail quality gate will be applied in assessment of bids as outlined in the additional documents.
