In December 2023 a landslip occurred on the R289 in Kilcoon, Co. Leitrim and has essentially undermined the north-bound lane of the R289. The damaged section of the R289 has been cordoned off (north-bound lane) and a traffic light system is in place, this will remain in place until suitable remedial works have been carried out. An options report has been completed and is included in the Information Pack. The preferred option recommended by this options report is to Excavate realign and replace the existing carriageway. The project will include a newly constructed carriageway which would be benched into the hillside to the north with a cut slope formed in a combination of rock and soil. The existing road at the location of the landslip is to be in part be excavated back to a competent strata and suitable granular fill, compacted and graded to a suitable inclination to stabilise the slope and prevent the failure from moving northwards.
