Cwm Pennant Peatland Restoration 2026-27: Hafod Hir

RSPB Cymru is looking to appoint a contractor to deliver works on the Cwm Pennant Estate as an adjacent part of an ongoing programme of peatland restoration. The contractor will be using excavators to raise water tables across blanket bog by blocking drainage ditches, gullies and peat pipe with peat or timber reinforced peat dams, reprofiling peat hags and contour bunding. Cwm Pennant is an upland estate that includes 706ha of protected moorland, with areas of severely degraded blanket bog. Pressures from historical management and climate change have produced conditions in which much of the peatland within the site is not currently functioning at its peak ecological, economic or social capital. Located within the Berwyn SSSI, the site has fantastic potential to return to contributing to a landscape that supports rare and priority species. The site is extensively drained and the highly heather-dominated vegetation structure on deep peat indicates this. Works planned to block draining features will support aims to not merely to ensure that the habitat is in favourable condition and not emitting carbon, but to ensure it underpins a healthy and resilient peatland ecosystem. This resilience includes water provision and storage, resilience to stochastic events such as wildfire, in combination with its cultural and visual value and support for biodiverse ecosystems of wildlife.
