Description

Forestry and Land Scotland require the following types of survey (scientific data collection rather than questionnaires) to be conducted: — Stocking Density Assessment (SDA), — Deer — Nearest Neighbour, — Deer — Dung Count, — regeneration surveys, — walk-through surveys, — production surveys, — attribute surveys, — hylobius surveys, — drone surveys. All surveys aside from Drones will require a parallel herbivore assessment to be run at the same time. Herbivore Impact Assessment. This is intended to be a 2 stage process. We intend to publish the ESPD and run Skills Tests in May and June to qualify for the second stage, which will include technical questions and the pricing. For commercially planted crops – an assessment of establishing the number of trees planted at the correct spacing Deer - Dung count – self explanatory; provides data on levels of deer density Walk-throughs are a high-level survey in newly establishing forest areas to determine whether a plotting exercise is required, and what kind of management is required. This data is used to manage regeneration and planting sites. Data collection gathered to inform how much timber is available or will be extracted from the site. Dtaa collection, using similar techniques to production surveys, used to inform our sub compartment database as to the species composition and stocking density and various other attributes. Hylobius surveys - assess the population density of weevils, and their distribution through the Forestry estate. Drone surveys and related work - most of the work will be a wind blow event, or a fence line needs inspected, or aerial photography is needed for mapping. There will be working in a forest environment, and there may be a requirement for specialist equipment - e.g. detecting fire risks using IR — Deer – nearest neighbour involves tracking populations of deer moving through the forest and plotting this out. — Regen surveys – contractors will have to do stratification, and then conduct a plot based assessment on the amount and nature of any regeneration in the area.
