Description
HM Prison Service (HMPS) serves the public by keeping in custody those committed by the courts. The Service has a duty to look after prisoners with humanity and help them lead law-abiding and useful lives in custody and after release. The prison industries employ prisoners in various capacities making a variety of items for the internal and external markets. The industries provide out-of-cell activities to prisoners and, wherever possible, to instil in them a work ethic to help them gain skills, qualifications and work experience in order to improve their employment prospects upon release. One of the key prison industries is the furniture industry. Prison industry furniture workshops produce a number of items including dining chairs, easy chairs, classroom chairs, and conference chairs for the internal prison market. These items are used in a variety of settings including recreation and education areas, conference rooms and visiting areas. The furniture workshops produce two models of chair which require the supply of laminated seats and backs. One model is produced at HMP Featherstone, and the other model is produced at HMP Manchester. HMPS intends to let a framework agreement to a suitable supplier for the provision of laminated seats and backs to the furniture industries. The framework agreement will last for two years with an option to extend by up to two further years, and will be available to the whole of the organisation across England and Wales.
