Description

The Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH) laboratory in the Histopathology Department at St. James’s Hospital has provided a hospital and national service since the 2010. The service is staffed by 2 medical scientists. Currently the service offers the following assays for diagnostics and predictive testing: — Her2 gene amplification found in breast/gastric/colorectal cancer, — gene rearrangement/translocations found in lymphomas, — Alk and ROS1 gene rearrangement found in NSCLC. The Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH) technique is performed as a semi-automated assay, on formalin fixed paraffin embedded material. Future development Possible introduction of additional esoteric FISH testing for Lymphoma nationally — DUSP22, TP63 rearrangements, — 11q aberration. Possible development of Myeloma FISH service.
