Description

Exacerbated by its compact urban form and location in a natural bowl at the foot of the Chilterns, like most other UK urban authorities, Luton suffers from poor air quality. Currently the town has three Air Quality Management Areas declared for exceedance of the annual mean air quality objective for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and consistently performs disproportionately poorly in respect to Public Health Outcomes Framework Indicator 3.01 (Fraction of mortality attributable to particulate air pollution) when compared with statistical neighbours. In light of these challenges, Luton Borough Council (LBC) wishes to establish a network of sensor-based air pollution monitors to augment current monitoring, improve geographical coverage and make data available to the public in (near) real time so that it can be used to drive emission reductions.
