Description
DTU Nanolab intends to procure a high-end transmission electron microscope for state-of-the-art materials science research. The instrument will be part of the DTU Nanolab research infrastructure hosting several electron microscopes. Atomic resolution combined with highly sensitive analytical performance is required in order to map out individual atoms in materials, including electron beam sensitive materials. The instrument must be capable of highly efficient (non-destructive) analytical tomography to map out inhomogeneous samples in 3-dimensions (for instance for energy research). The instrument will be used in a multi-user environment by students, researchers and external customers and should therefore be a proven and robust and safe design that enables training to a wide and varied user base. Lot 1: The Spectra Ultra to be procured must fulfil the requirements for high-end materials science research and the following criteria: - Swift (<15min), repeatable and reliable high-tension exchange between high tension (300keV) for atomic resolution imaging and lower high-tension (30keV) for high performance analytical mapping (EDX). The ultra-high spatial resolution and performance of the instrument must be maintained within 15 min from change of high-tension. - High performance and sensitive EDX acquisition. Solid angle of EDX detector larger than 4srad without shadowing for tomography acquisition. The large detector is required for low dose EDX mapping of beam sensitive materials (MOFs) and for fast acquisition for dynamic studies of materials. Symmetrical geometry of the detectors is required to ensure reliable elemental quantification during EDX tomography. - High energy resolution (better than 30meV) is required to perform measurement of spatially resolved plasmonic phenomena in materials. - Electron energy-loss spectrometer for fast spectrum imaging (3000+ spectra per second) for study of dynamic phenomena. - Energy filter for acquiring chemical maps of large areas with high spatial resolution. - Atomic resolution at any high tension. Better than 0.6Å at high energy (300keV) and better than 1.4Å at low energy (30keV). - Optimized optics for EELS acquisition including large collection angles enabling fast and sensitive acquisition of EELS data at high energy losses (>3keV) for chemical quantification of high atomic number elements. - Spherical aberration correction for both the probe forming lenses and the image forming lenses to secure minimum distortion of the image signal for straightforward interpretation of data. - Live acquisition of low dose (<40 e-/Å2 total dose) atomic resolution images of light elements (down to hydrogen) required to monitor materials for hydrogen storage and beam sensitive materials among others. - Wide-gap objective lens (>5mm) to allow for (custom made) sample holders with extra functionality. This is essential for transferability of specialized sample holders and experiments between already existing complementary instruments at DTU Nanolab and the Spectra UItra. - Delivery and installation within Q1 of 2023.
