Description

The proposed scheme involves improvements to approximately 1.4km of the existing N56 Four Lane Road in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. The N56 Four Lane Road is the primary southern approach into the Gateway town of Letterkenny and is the main traffic artery for approximately 32,000 vehicles daily. The improvements include upgrades to a modified Urban Dual lane standard. The execution and completion of the Works includes the provision of the following:- • Various road and junction works, • Various kerbs, footway and cycleway works, • Various structural flood protection and cycleway works, • Various structural widening parapet works, • Various traffic signal and pedestrian crossing works, • Various accommodation works, • various drainage works, • various site clearance works; • various earthworks, • various fencing and safety barrier system works; • various signage works; • various landscaping and planting works; • New utilities and diversions of utilities including Eircom and ESB electrical utilities; and • Various ancillary works The N56 Four Lane Road is in close proximity to the Lough Swilly SAC for which the qualifying interests include Estuaries, Coastal lagoons, Atlantic salt meadows (Glauco-Puccinellietalia maritimae), Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils (Molinion caeruleae), Old sessile oak woods with Ilex and Blechnum in the British Isles, and the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). As such, the scheme has been specifically developed to acknowledge the sensitivity of the local catchment and to comply with SUDS principles. Several control measures have been incorporated into the Contract documents to meet the requirements described in the Environmental Impact Assessment and Screening for Appropriate Assessment for the project, as well as any mitigation measures required. These controls together with any avoidance and mitigation measures necessary (including procedures, plans, etc.) shall be implemented by the Contractor during the construction.
