Description
The action on plastics programme seeks to appoint contractors who can pilot approaches to reduce the use of single-use items, which are predominantly made of plastic. This project will look to test solutions in practice to enable Zero Waste Scotland to give clear evidence around the most sustainable and effective ways to reduce reliance on disposable items. We are looking to see what can be achieved through mobilising action in communities on specific issues based on the latest research and evidence. These actions will need to be compatible with ambitions to reduce plastic consumption and increase reuse models, not simply change to alternative single-use materials without adequate life-cycle analysis. The objectives of this contract are: — to assist Zero Waste Scotland to counter rising misconceptions about plastic and educate communities on sustainable alternatives; — to pilot approaches that prevent and reduce the use of single-use plastics and single-use items in communities across Scotland at events, in community spaces, and with organisations and businesses; — develop and foster partnerships within the target communities to allow actions to be taken; — contribute evidence, case studies and learnings to enable Zero Waste Scotland to create a plastics and single use ‘handbook’, that can provide clear guidance on tested solutions for a wide variety of ways to reduce the use of single use items, along with practical advice on how to deliver them and engaging case studies. Areas of focus include events, community spaces, local organisations and businesses. Delivery will be within communities in the Highlands and Islands (H&I) of Scotland only.
