Aberavon Dune Restoration Works

An award has been made by Neath Port Talbot Council for the following:-After successfully secured funding from the Welsh Government’s Coastal Capacity Fund and Local Places for Nature Challenge Fund to help restore nature along NPT’s coastline through the Coastal Connections Project. The primary objective of this project is to enhance and introduce additional biodiverse green spaces along NPT’s coastline for the benefit of the local community while simultaneously creating new habitats for pollinators and other invertebrates. This endeavour also aims to educate the community about their coastal surroundings and actively engage them with the natural world.As part of the project, the successful contractor will deliver the recommendations provided in a consultant report that was commissioned in 2023 to carry out dune stabilization and wind-blown sand control measures at Aberavon Beach.The aim of the works is to reduce the erosion of the dunes from recreational pressure as well as provide a solution for the issue of windblown sand incursion into the properties behind the dunes, notably the Davies DIY and Builders Merchant. This will be achieved by reprofiling the sand dunes, followed by the installation of chestnut paling fencing and planting of native dune species to encourage re-vegetation and stabilization of the dunes.The successful contractor will deliver the outcomes set out in the consultant’s report over the period August 2024 – 30th November 2024.
