Description

English Heritage are seeking to appoint a contractor to carry-out conservation repairs to the Durbar Wing at Osborne, a Grade 1 Listed Building on the Isle of Wight. Osborne was a favoured residence of Queen Victoria. It is a large Italianate residence built in 1845-51 and is set in a landscape park. The Durbar Wing at Osborne is located at the north‐east corner of the central Pavilion Range. It was added in 1890/91 to provide a state banqueting room as well as accommodation for Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter Princess Beatrice, her husband Prince Henry of Battenberg and their three children. The proposed conservation repair works to the Durbar Wing at Osborne can be summarised as follows: • Erection of self‐supporting scaffold and temporary roof over the Durbar Wing. Temporary alterations to lightning conductor system, existing electrical works for flood lighting and security system followed by reinstatement upon completion of roofing works. • Careful removal asphalt decking roof, lead roofs and flashings. • Careful removal and setting aside of roof slates for reinstatement. • Repairs to structural roof members as required. • Splice repair to rooflight window cills. • Easing and redecoration of external face of roof lantern windows. • Re‐glazing of roof lanterns and rooflights. • Installation of new parapet lead gutter including substructure in treated softwood. • Installation of new lead roof over lantern roofs. • Re‐slating of roof, supplementing existing slates with new slates to match existing. • Insertion of new breathable insulation at first floor ceiling level. • New lead hips, ridge, lead flashings, upstands and window lead covers throughout. • Replacement of 2no. roof hatches. • Making good of render finishes affected by roofing works including re‐decoration of all elevations including balustrades and urns. • Inspection of diagonal, horizontal and vertical cracking and subject to confirmation on site, allowance for repair works in form of brick stitching and Heli‐bar reinforcement. • Easing and redecoration of external face of windows on Durbar Wing. • Fitting of new domed stainless steel mesh chimney guards. Due to the historic significance of Osborne House and the delicate nature of the conservation repair items, a contractor or specialist sub-contractors will be required to carry-out the conservation repair works. Invitations to Tender are due to be issued at the end of June 2015. The works are planned to be undertaken for October 2015 to March 2016. Suppliers should return their tender as per the instructions in the invitation to tender documents.
