Description
The main aim of the procurement of a universal friction measuring instrument for the Tribology Research Group in MTP, is to offer a flexible tool for studying tribological performance of different materials in different load areas (from mN to kN) and different environmental situations (tribocorrosion chamber, high temperatures, controlled atmosphere, etc.). The only possible candidate in the market that can offer all the required functions is the MFT-5000 multi-functional friction measuring platform from Rtec Instruments. Rtec Instruments has a contract with ST Instruments to sell the instruments in the Scandinavian countries. You cannot procure directly from Rtec without going through ST Instruments in Scandinavia. NTNU will, therefore, enter into a contract with ST Instruments. The most important functions that are required in the instrument are mentioned below: 1) Modular design in order to enable studies in different tribological configurations, temperatures, environmental conditions on the same framework by simply changing the equipment modules. 2) Availability of three different normal load areas: mN area for nano friction measuring studies, 1-50 area for normal wear tests and kN area for special cases of higher contact pressure. 3) Availability of integrated 3D optical surface profilometer in order to study wear and changes in surface topography in situ during friction measuring experiments. 4) Option to carry out tests in high temperatures and temperatures that are below zero. Different temperature chambers are wanted for different temperature areas from -100 ̊C up to 1 200 ̊C. 5) Option for testing in corrosion environments or other liquid media (tribocorrosion module).
