Forestry Research Services to Support the Sustainable Management of the Welsh Government Woodland Estate

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) manages the Welsh Government Woodland Estate (WGWE) and also acts as a regulator for tree health and wider woodland issues ensuring that the principles of Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (SMNR) are followed. This agreement will provide access to specialist scientific knowledge, skills and data management support to undertake these roles. NRW manages the Welsh Government Woodland Estate and also acts as a regulator for tree health and wider woodland issues ensuring that the principles of Sustainable Management of Natural Resources are followed. In order to fulfil these requirements and manage WGWE in line with SMNR principles (economic, social and environmental), NRW are establishing a partnership with Forest Research. Forest Research have been working with NRW since its formation and have extensive knowledge and experience of forestry in Wales, and also have partnerships with equivalent organisations managing the government woodland estates in England and Scotland. This agreement will cover the key areas of: - Specialist tree health surveillance and identification knowledge, advice and support - Wider evidence requirements for Sustainable Management of Natural Resources - Data management for the management of government woodland estate This partnership will run for a 5 year period from 2020-2025.
