Description
GLLC is located in east central London and forms an integral part of the Grade II listed Golden Lane Estate. It opened in 1963 and was last substantially refurbished in 2012. In October 2025, through the UK Leisure Framework, the City appointed a multi-disciplinary design team, led by Hadron Consulting and FaulknerBrowns Architects, to develop a RIBA Stage 2 design report for a proposed refurbishment of GLLC. The RIBA Stage 2 refurbishment proposals were approved by the City on 29 January 2026. Alongside the refurbishment project, the City appointed The Sports Consultancy (TSC) to assist with the procurement of a new leisure management contract for GLLC following refurbishment. GLLC is currently managed by Fusion Lifestyle on a contract is due to expire in December 2026. The agreed proposed refurbishment to the centre will provide the following facility mix: • 20m x 8m Swimming pool • Sauna/steam room • 3 x multi-purpose fitness studios (replacing the current health & fitness gym) • 1 x treatment area • 52-station health and fitness gym (replacing existing sports exercise studio) • 2 x outdoor tennis courts Figure 1 shows the location of GLLC and an estimated 20-min walk time catchment. Within this catchment there is a population of 80,592, which is broken down as follows: • Aged 0-14: 9,597 • Aged 15-64: 64,019 • Aged 65+: 6,963.
