The Department of the Economy is the sponsor of the six Further Education (FE) Colleges, operating under the auspices of the Further Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 as well as the Articles and Instruments of Government in place for each institution. The resource funding of this sector, approximately £235million, equates to approximately a quarter of the Department’s annually managed budget. Oversight and governance is provided by FE Division within the Department. FE Division is seeking to commission an independent assessment of one of the colleges, Northern Regional College (NRC), as to the adequacy of NRC’s finance capacity and capability, including its financial systems and procedures, to support effective financial management and reporting.
